The Donkey Kong (series) is a series created by Nintendo whom Rare helped out with since Donkey Kong Country and made many popular characters including Diddy Kong and Rambi the Rhinoceros. The other included games made by Rare include Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, two sequels to Donkey Kong Country. Donkey Kong Country had a Game Boy Color remake in 2000 which had a couple of differences.

The series also had the Donkey Kong Land series which are interquels taking place between two of the Donkey Kong Country games, except for Donkey Kong Land III which does not have the events of Donkey Kong Country Returns, a non-Rare game, take over. The Donkey Kong Land series has three games; Donkey Kong Land, Donkey Kong Land 2, and Donkey Kong Land III. Donkey Kong Land III was released in Japan for the Game Boy Color.

Two different games were released called Donkey Kong 64 and Diddy Kong Racing which are both games for the Nintendo 64. Donkey Kong 64 is a Nintendo 64 platformer being one of the sequels to Donkey Kong Country. Diddy Kong Racing is a spinoff racing game to the Donkey Kong series featuring Banjo and Conker who would later have their own series.

In 2002, three other spinoff games to the Donkey Kong series were in development by Rare and Nintendo until all three were cancelled, due to Rare's move to Microsoft. The three games are as follows; Donkey Kong Racing, Diddy Kong Pilot, and Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers. Donkey Kong Racing was a game that was going to be for the GameCube and never had a replacement unlike the other two, due to Rare using the Xbox back then as their home console game they create games for. The other two were Diddy Kong Pilot, a racing sequel to Diddy Kong Pilot and Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers, the game that was going to be the first puzzle game in the Donkey Kong series, both for the Game Boy Advance. The two had been replaced as Banjo-Pilot and It's Mr. Pants respectively which are also Game Boy Advance games.

Later on, Rare only worked on remakes for the Donkey Kong series on handhelds. The Donkey Kong Country series had remakes for the Game Boy Advance and Diddy Kong Racing had a DS remake. It is unknown if there are going to be more Donkey Kong games having remakes from Rare and Nintendo.
